To strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security and curb smuggling across inland waterways, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) have jointly tested a locally built airboat at Jabi Lake, Abuja.

The vessel, developed through indigenous engineering efforts, is designed to navigate shallow and hard-to-reach waterways—terrain often exploited by smugglers.

Officers from both agencies participated in the test run, which showcased the airboat’s tactical capabilities and its potential to enhance surveillance and interdiction operations.

Comptroller Haniel Haddison, who oversees Special Duties at NCS Headquarters, described the innovation as a milestone in local technology. “This is a welcome idea for the Nigeria Customs Service, and we commend the efforts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, to ensure that we add value in our equipment,” Haddison said. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, noting that such partnerships improve operational capacity and foster knowledge sharing.

Rear Admiral Suleiman El-Ladan, Director of Maritime Research and Development at DRDB, echoed the sentiment, stating that joint efforts between security agencies are essential to addressing evolving threats. “Technology-driven cooperation not only enhances operational capacity but also ensures sustainable responses to smuggling and other illicit maritime activities,” he said.

The demonstration concluded with a symbolic gesture, as the Director General of DRDB presented commemorative souvenirs to senior Customs officers in recognition of their commitment to the initiative.

The airboat project reflects a broader push by Nigerian agencies to adopt homegrown solutions for national security challenges, reducing reliance on foreign-built patrol crafts and tailoring responses to local conditions.
